Overview

Border encounters in 2025 reached their lowest level since 1970—proof that enforcement can work. Fentanyl seizures dropped 55% from 2024. But the system remains broken: 3.75 million cases backlog the immigration courts with 4+ year asylum wait times. Legal immigrants wait decades in some categories due to outdated quotas. Here's a fact that surprises many: nearly 90% of fentanyl seizures occur at ports of entry, and 81% of smugglers caught are U.S. citizens. We need smart enforcement and a functioning legal system.

The Challenge

The asylum system is overwhelmed—average wait is 4.3 years. Meanwhile, legal immigrants from high-demand countries like India face 10+ year waits after already being approved. Border Patrol is 2,000 officers below authorized levels with only 1.8% of applicants completing training. The fentanyl crisis killed 76,000 Americans in 2023, though deaths dropped to 48,000 in 2024—a 37% decrease. We face genuine humanitarian obligations alongside security needs. Enforcement without legal pathways just creates more illegal immigration.

The Solution

Complete border infrastructure in high-traffic areas with technology coverage everywhere. Hire and retain Border Patrol agents with competitive pay—address the 6% attrition rate. Process asylum claims in 90 days, not 4 years—quick decisions deter frivolous claims and protect legitimate refugees. Clear the legal immigration backlog within 5 years—people who follow the rules shouldn't wait decades. Implement mandatory E-Verify with real penalties. Create functional guest worker programs to meet labor needs legally. Stop fentanyl at ports of entry where most is seized.

Expected Impact

  • Maintain operational border control achieved in 2025 (lowest crossings since 1970)

  • Process asylum claims within 90 days instead of 4+ years

  • Clear legal immigration backlog—reward those who follow the law

  • Hire 20,000 Border Patrol agents with improved recruitment and retention

  • Stop fentanyl trafficking—focus resources where seizures actually occur

  • Implement mandatory E-Verify with meaningful employer penalties

  • Create legal pathways that reduce pressure for illegal immigration
